Exploring the Rhone Region

Hey there! Recently Mel visited for almost three weeks. We spent a great weekend in Chamonix snowboarding in the Alps. We also spent weekends in Gruyere and Bern in Switzerland and Annecy and Lyon in the Rhone region of France. We stayed in a small town near Chamonix, called Les Houches with very easy access to the ski resort.  Lots of time was spent on the slopes snowboarding, cuddled up in the chalet bar near the fire and eating good Savoyard cuisine.  Saturday morning we got up early to head into Chamonix to go to the famous Aiguille de Midi.  It was an incredibly sunny day and the views of the Alps were simply stunning.  We were about the only ones on the telephrique who were not bringing ski equipment with us to desend the famous off-pist Valley Blanche. We saw all the skiiers starting their trips with their guides.    SONY DSC

The weekend after our great snowboarding getaway in the Alps, we checked out Gruyeres, Switzerland where the yummy cheese comes from. We visited the cheese factory and also the medieval Castle up in the old town. It is a very charming town with some interesting museums and cafes (one which is alien themed – Men in Black style)!

Mel’s last weekend was spent in Lyon, the gastronomical capital of France.  You might remember I visited Lyon last spring on my own.  It was nice to have Mel there this time. We took a tour of the old town and the famous Trabouls (secret passage ways through buildings).  It was a fun weekend and great end to Mel’s visit.
